The 1991-92 season was another struggle as the Mavericks fell to 22-60. On October 16, Roy Tarpley was banned from the NBA for violating the league's substance abuse policy for a third time. It was a sad turn of events for a man whose career had once held great promise. Tarpley had been voted to the 1986-87 NBA All-Rookie Team and initially sought treatment following that season. In 1987-88 he won the NBA Sixth Man Award, averaging 13.5 points and 11.8 rebounds. In the middle of the 1988-89 campaign he was suspended for 49 games. He missed the final 77 games of the 1990-91 season after injuring his right knee. Tarpley played in only 69 of 246 games from 1989-90 through 1991-92 because of injuries and suspensions. During that time the Mavericks were 45-24 (.652) with him and 68-109 (.384) without him. The team began the season 2-27 at which point Richie Adubato was fired and replaced with interim coach Gar Heard. Won 22, lost 60 (fifth, Midwest)
