Bernard James (born February 7, 1985) was obtained by the Dallas Mavericks in a draft-night trade, along with Jae Crowder and Jared Cunningham, from the Cleveland Indians, in exchange for Kelenna Azubuike and the rights to the Mavs first round pick Tyler Zeller.

James was cut from the freshman team in high school and did not play organized basketball at all in high school. Upon graduation he opted to follow in the footsteps of his step-father and joined the military. With the Air Force, he served six years (2003-2008) and served three tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Qatar. He also regained his love for basketball.

Upon completion of his tenure in the USAF, James attended Tallahassee Community College where he earned All-Panhandle Conference First Team honors twice and left ranked second in school history in FG% (.624), rebounds (512) and blocks (131).

Leaving TCC, the 6'10 center chose to attend Florida State where he made an immediate impact. As a junior, he led the Seminoles in blocks (2.4 bpg) and FG% (.657) while finishing second in rebounds (5.9 rpg) and fourth in points (8.6 ppg). The next season he again led the team in blocks and FG% along with rebounds while finishing second in scoring. As a senior he was also earned All-ACC Honorable Mention honors and was named to the ACC All-Defensive team. Overall he helped FSU win their first ACC Championship in school history while taking the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances. He ranks second in Florida State history in FG% (.62.7) and third all time in blocked shots (164) all while playing only twl seasons.

He was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2012 NBA Draft. That same night, James, along with fellow Cleveland draft choices Jared Cunningham and Jae Crowder were traded to the Mavericks for Dallas' first round selection (Tyler Zeller) and veteran guard Kelenna Azubuike.

Beginning his Mavs' career in the NBA Summer League, James averaged team highs of 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks, along with 10.2 points, in 5 games. He finished third overall in the league in blocks and fifth in rebounds.

Playing behind both Chris Kaman and Elton Brand in his rookie campaign, James averaged 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while seeing action in 46 contests.

Playing in only 30 games his sophomore year with the Mavs, James had an outstanding 2014 summer league campaign for Dallas averaging 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds in 25.5 minutes per game of action. Those numbers led him to signing a one-year contract offer with the Mavs for 2014-2015.

He was among that final cuts the Mavs made during their 2014 training camp. For his career with Dallas he averaged 2.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 7.9 minutes in 76 career games which included 11 starts.

After a short stint with the Texas Legends of the NBA D-League, James went overseas to play professionally in China. The 6'10 center played three months in China before returning and signing a ten-day contract with the Mavs on February 11, 2015.

He was signed on March 3, 2015 for the remainder of the season.
