Rick Hughes (born August 22, 1973 in Cincinnati, Ohio) was signed by the Dallas Mavericks as a free agent on November 4, 1999.
Hughes attended Thomas More College in Kentucky where he averaged 27 points-per-game and 9 rebounds-per-game. He completed his career at Thomas More as the school's all time leading scorer with 2,605 points in four years. He's also number one in free throws attempted, free throws made and steals. He's number four all-time in steals and number five in rebounds.
Undrafted out of college he took his game to Europe where he began a very successful career. Returning each season to the States, Hughes attended free agent camps with Chicago, Phoenix and Utah before catching on the Dallas. The Mavericks signed the 6'9 forward as the 1999 season began.
In 21 games that season, he averaged 3.9 ppg and 2.3 rpg. He was waived on January 5, 2000 and was not to return to the NBA.
Instead Hughes returned to Europe where he was named the All-French Pro A League Player of the Year in 2004. He went to Italy the next season and on to Spain in 2005. For two straight seasons he led Baloncesto Leon to the Spanish League Championship game.
His Euroleague biography calls Hughes an "extremely talented and exciting player. A 6'9 true athlete who runs, jumps and dinks as well as any big man anywhere." High praise indeed.
Hughes is playing the 2009-2010 season in Spain with Grupo Begar Leon.
